🌊💩Dirty Water – water pollution protest💩🌊

28th January 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

It is beyond outrageous that water companies are allowed with impunity to pump untreated sewage into our waterways, making them unsafe for water users, and damaging delicate ecosystems. Some brilliant campaigning here in Oxford has highlighted this problem locally, leading to our gaining the UK’s second official bathing site- which is officially unsafe to bathe in a shocking proportion of the time.

As part of a nationwide action, we are going to commemorate the fact that, in October 2021, the government was presented with an opportunity to regulate water companies more effectively – and chose to vote against it. We will unveil a ‘blue plaque’ marking the occasion, there will be speeches by local politicians and affected groups, and the Red Rebels will perform.

Please join us, bring placards, and spread the word to anyone you know with an interest in clean rivers and seas. Port Meadow is currently flooded – we think the waters should recede over the next few days, but wellies are definitely advisable! The bathing site adjoins a car park, which we can keep to if the ground is too boggy. Care will also need to be taken not to disturb wildfowl, to avoid the spread of avian flu. 📷📹Special call out for photographers!📷📹
We don’t yet have anyone lined up to photograph the action – and it is essential we get some good images (possibly even video) for the press and social media. If you could help with this, please get in touch: xroxfordcoordinator@gmail.com
